Aviation Station
County of Los Angeles, CA
The Aviation Station project is a transit-oriented development (TOD) proposed immediately adjacent to the existing Metro Green Line Aviation Station at Aviation Boulevard and Imperial Highway. The Aviation Station provides a unique mix of a light rail station, associated transit bus hub facilities (including shuttle service to LAX), a park-and-ride lot, and a Caltrans maintenance facility. In addition to preparing the EIR traffic impact study for the TOD project, LLG worked with the project design team, as well as representatives from Metro, Caltrans, various transit agencies (e.g., Metro, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Los Angeles World Airports, etc.), in the modification and enhancement to Aviation Station to promote connectivity between the proposed TOD and the light rail station, provide improved transit bus drop-off/pick-up facilities (including layover areas), convenient access for park-and-ride users, and safe and efficient access for Caltrans-related maintenance vehicles. LLG’s review included documentation of the existing travel patterns related to the various population groups (transit buses, park-and-ride users, Caltrans vehicles, etc.) and recommendations for enhancements to site access and internal circulation to promote the use of light rail and public bus transportation. Recommendations have been provided by LLG to allow for safe pedestrian movements between the light rail platforms and the TOD, the transit bus drop-off/pick-up area and the park-and-ride lot. LLG prepared vehicle maneuvering studies to allow the design team to allocate sufficient area to provide safe and efficient movement of various size transit bus and Caltrans vehicles.
